As a high school math teacher I have a goal to create a safe and supportive environment. Taking 5 or 10 minutes out of class each day to discuss topics that are more relevant to a teenage perception of "real life" than the Pythagorean Theorem is, establishes a climate that is more conducive to learning and open discussion.
